Course overview

The role of cleaning in hospitals has never been more important and a good understanding of the guidelines and principles of cleaning is vital to carrying out this work. This training course summarises the importance of maintaining a clean hospital environment, why healthcare staff need to understand and carry out their specific cleaning responsibilities, practical advice about cleaning and the latest COVID-19 infection control guidance from the Department of Health.

This course can be accessed at work or at home on a variety of smart devices.

  • Learning outcomes

    On completion of this course trainees will:
    1. Gain awareness of the guidance that underpin hospital cleaning policies.
    2. Understand how contamination can spread and how this affects surface decontamination. 
    3. Understand the difference between cleaning and disinfection and what to look for when selecting products for surface cleaning.
    4. Have knowledge of the techniques and considerations for effective surface cleaning including during the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • Course content

    • The theory behind environmental cleaning
    • Environmental cleaning in practice

    The course is accompanied by a multiple choice test to assess the trainee’s understanding of the content. When the module test is completed the trainee will have access to a personalised certificate.
