As per the local ACORN guidelines - all members of the surgical team have a duty to follow a standardised procedure for surgical hand antisepsis prior to donning sterile gown and gloves.

For surgical hand antisepsis using an alcohol based hand rub, adherence to the contact time on the skin is critical to ensuring that the hands are effectively prepared for surgery.

The prescribed contact time for MICROSHIELD® Antiseptic Hand Rub Solution (MARS) is 90 seconds, this course takes you through the use of this product.

Course overview

For surgical hand antisepsis using an alcohol based hand rub, adherence to the contact time on the skin is critical to ensuring that the hands are effectively prepared for surgery.

The prescribed contact time for MICROSHIELD® Antiseptic Hand Rub Solution (MARS) is 90 seconds, and during this 90 seconds, the hands and forearms must remain wet for the antiseptic rub to achieve appropriate efficacy (bacterial load reduction of both transient and resident flora) required for a surgical hand antisepsis.

This course consist of a video and short test at the end and takes about 15 minutes to complete. You may also wish to take the course '(ANZ) Surgical Hand Antisepsis' that covers in more detail hand hygiene and surgical hand antisepsis.


  • Aims & Objectives

    1. ​Identify key principles of surgical hand rubbing​
    2. Understanding the benefits of using a waterless surgical hand rub solution ​
    3. Identify the correct surgical rub technique according to ACORN, & WHO guidelines.​
    4. Demonstrate correct application of MICROSHIELD® Antiseptic rub solution (MARS) according to the manufacturer IFU.  ​
    5. Explain the importance of complete skin coverage and contact time requirements for MARS​
