Course overview

Provides a practical and focused guide to Surgical Hand Antisepsis including types of hand hygiene in the perioperative setting. The course addresses surgical hand antisepsis principles, objectives and technique taking into consideration associated guidelines, peak body recommendations and manufacturer’s recommendations for use for MICROSHIELD® 4% Chlorhexidine, PVP- Povidone Iodine and Antiseptic Rub Solution. Complete this training at work or at home on a variety of devices including computers, tablets and smart phones.

This course consists of one module with 5 topics, a short test where you need 11 out of 12 questions correct to pass and this contributes 45 minutes towards your continued professional development upon completion of this course.

Surgical Hand Antisepsis facility specific protocols, procedures and competency requirements are not covered in this course, please contact your local manager or educator with regards to these specifics.


    1. List the importance of and types of hand hygiene in the perioperative environment​
    2. Understand and explain the key principles of surgical hand antisepsis​
    3. Demonstrate the correct surgical scrub & rub technique according to ACORN, WHO & application of MICROSHIELD® products according to the manufacturer IFU. ​
    4. Gain an understanding of the benefits of using a waterless surgical hand rub solution​
    5. Identify 3 requirements for effective surgical hand antisepsis​
